What Is Body Casting? A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Art of Life Casting
Have you ever wished you could preserve a moment in time—not just in a photograph, but as a tangible sculpture you can hold, display, and treasure for years to come? That is the beauty of body casting.
At Sacred Body Casting, I transform the details and contours of the human body into three-dimensional sculptures that celebrate life, connection, and the beauty of the human form. From pregnancy and baby keepsakes to custom body casts and fine art sculptures, each piece captures something that makes a moment, a person, or an experience meaningful.
As an artist, I see body casting as more than a way to create a keepsake. It is an opportunity to preserve a physical impression of a person while honoring the stories and experiences we carry.
What Is Body Casting?
Body casting, also known as life casting, is an artistic process that creates a three-dimensional reproduction of part or all of the human body. Unlike a photograph, which captures a moment on a flat surface, a body cast preserves physical contours, curves, and exact details in sculptural form.
Body casting can commemorate significant milestones, celebrate the human form, or become a work of fine art. Popular options include maternity casts, baby hand and foot castings, hand casts, face casts, dog paws, and custom sculptures.
Every cast is unique because every body is unique.
Behind the Scenes: How Does Body Casting Work?

Creating a custom body cast involves patience, precision, and attention to detail. While each project is different, the process generally includes three stages.
1. Creating the mold
The process begins by preparing the area and applying the skin-safe molding material to capture the details of the body. This stage requires care, communication, and attention to comfort and safety.
2. Creating the sculpture
Once the mold is ready, casting materials are used to create the three-dimensional sculpture. The contours and precise details that were captured in the mold reveal themselves in the finished sculpture.
3. Refining the final piece
The sculpture is carefully cleaned, sanded, painted, and finished by hand. Depending on the project, additional sculptural details or surface treatments may be incorporated to achieve the desired result.
The final piece is an identical impression of the original form, created to be treasured as a keepsake or experienced as a work of art.
What Can You Preserve Through Body Casting?
Body casting can celebrate many different chapters of life. Maternity sculptures honor the remarkable changes of pregnancy, while baby hand and foot castings preserve the tiny details that change so quickly as children grow.
Custom hand, face, and body casts offer other ways to commemorate relationships, personal milestones, and meaningful experiences. I also create pet paw castings for those who want a lasting keepsake of a beloved companion.
Beyond these personal commissions, body casting is central to my fine art practice. Through my current sculptural project called Stories Our Bodies Carry, I explore the human form, ancestry, and the wisdom passed through generations.
The Meaning Behind My Work
My relationship with body casting extends beyond the technical process. I am drawn to the way the body can hold personal stories, physical histories, and connections to those who came before us.
Alongside body casting, my artistic practice includes ceramics and other sculptural explorations. I approach making as an intuitive and reflective process, using physical materials to give form to ideas that are sometimes difficult to express in words.
Through Sacred Body Casting, I hope to create work that encourages people to appreciate their bodies, celebrate meaningful moments, and see the beauty in the details that make each of us unique.
